While Hitler was serving a year prison sentence for treason, that’s when his basic idea of political strategy and tactics began. Hitler ran in the presidential election but came in second to WWI war hero Field Marshal Paul con Hindenburg. With turn of events President Hindenburg knew he needed help so he called Hitler to the chancellorship to head a coalition government of Nazis. Two years in office he dedicated everything to consolidation of power. With several prominent Nazis in other key positions he quickly gained practical control. Hitler convinced the aging president Hindenburg and the Reichstag to give him the emergency powers suspending the constitution in the so-called Enabling Act of Feb 28, 1933. Under this act and a mysterious fire in the Reichstag building he rapidly eliminate political rivals and brought all levels of government and major political institutions under his control. With the death of President Hindenburg August 1934 that’s when the title of president ended. Hitler officially became Fuhrer of Germany and thereby head of state as well as commander in chief of the armed forces. In the great Nazi mass rally of 1934 in Nuremberg is where millions marched in unison and saluted Hitler.
Key people in office when he took over.
Hermann Göring, as minister of interior in Prussia
Wilhelm Frick, as minister of interior of the central government, controlled the police forces and his military ally Werner von Blomberg in the Defense Ministry
Key people after he became fuhrer
Joseph Goebbels's extensive propaganda machine
Heinrich Himmler's police system simultaneously perfected totalitarian control of Germany,
When internal control was assured that’s when Hitler began to mobilize Germany resources for military conquest and racial domination of Central and Eastern Europe. With around six million unemployed he put them to work on vast rearmament and building programs, with propaganda campaigns preparing the nation for war. At this time the enemy was all Jewish people. Anything associated with the Jewish people was on obstacle and in the way of total power.
